Joan Carney
Executive Director, Hoffman SummerWood Community

As SummerWood’s founding Executive Director, Joan Carney is responsible for the administration and operation of all programs at SummerWood, from strategic planning through implementation. She brings a unique combination of clinical and administrative skills to her role as Executive Director.
In addition to her role overseeing all aspects of SummerWood, since 2004 Ms. Carney has played a leading role conceiving of, planning, and supervising SummerWood’s current expansion.
Ms. Carney has been with Hebrew Health Care, SummerWood’s parent company, since 1995. Prior to becoming Executive Director at SummerWood, she was director of Hebrew Health Care's Home Health Care Agency (now part of Hebrew Community Services). Ms. Carney also worked for various Visiting Nurse Associations for 12 years, seven of them in a supervisory or management capacity.
Ms Carney was recently honored with the Executive Director Hero Award from the Assisted Living Federation of America for her extraordinary professional service and committment to senior living residents and their families. Under her direction, SummerWood is proud to be the recipient of 4 program awards, both at the state and national level.
Ms. Carney began her career as a registered nurse, after receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA.
Valerie Bartos
Director of Community Relations

Valerie Bartos is the Director of Community Relations at Hoffman SummerWood Community, and has been with SummerWood since its opening in 2001. In addition to being responsible for the community outreach for the community, Ms Bartos has a primary role in assisting residents in all phases of the move-in process. Her experience encompasses over 10 years in the senior living field, a background in real estate and the assistive hearing industry.
Randolph Scott
Executive Chef
Randolph Scott, better known in the SummerWood kitchen and dining room as “Chef Scotty,” has been a chef for close to 25 years. Mr. Scott has opened several fine restaurants in the US, Europe, and the West Indies, has served in various executive dining positions in resort hotels throughout the Caribbean, and has experience providing private catering services.
Mr. Scott's broad experience has taught him a variety of techniques for meeting the demanding tastes of diners in a resort environment. These techniques have been smoothly incorporated into the process of developing a fine Kosher cuisine at SummerWood featuring a broad range of selections for members and their guests. Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented dishes are Chef Scotty’s signature at SummerWood. Mr. Scott was recently recognized by the Assisted Living Federation of America with a 2009 Champion Award for his exemplary professional service and committment to seniors. Mr. Scott has been at SummerWood since its opening in 2001.
Janice Gibson, Director, Assisted Living Services Agency, Hebrew Community Services

Janice Gibson is responsible for the oversight of the Assisted Living Services Agency providing health and personal services at multiple locations in the greater Hartford area. The services are provided to individuals in their homes through a contract agreement between the Agency and Managed Residential Communities (MRC).
Ms Gibson has been with Hebrew Health Care since 2005. Prior to this endeavor she has held multiple supervisory positions including supervisor of assisted living services, clinical supervisor of home health services, director of senior housing, director of senior services and manager of community programs. Ms Gibson has extensive experience in program development and implementation.
Ms Gibson earned a Diploma from the School of Nursing, New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston, MA.
